Parhill Cardboard Boat Races

Building Manual

Saturday

July 11th, 2009

This year we have decided that assembly of your boats can be done in advance.  We must remind you that in fairness to all participants, these rules will be adhered to.  Please keep in mind that one of our judges is very, very knowledgeable in the hardware business and any illegal substance used to keep your boat afloat will result in a disqualification. If there is any doubt that illegal substances has been used, the judges reserve the right to cut open the boat to inspect the materials used.  Any materials found, deemed illegal will result in immediate disqualification without refund, so please read OUR RULES carefully.

We strongly suggest that you do some research on how to build a floatable boat.  Internet addresses are “ Cardboard Boat Building” or “Cardboard Boat Races”.  Little hint, make a prototype of your boat & try it out for durability and floatability before the event.

Please print out your entry forms & drop off at Town Hall, Parkhill or at The Corner Café located at Paton’s Esso in Parkhill.

& Regulations

1.                              The overall goal of this event is having fun – staying dry is part of the challenge!  Boats made entirely of cardboard will race on a

200 yard course with two turns.  Boat are timed and compete for trophies against boats in their category and division.  Boats are also judged on appearance.

2.                              Consent/waiver forms are required to be signed.  At that

time an “Entry Arm Band” will be wrist applied, as proof of

eligibility to compete.  All participants younger than 17 requires

Parent or Guardian’s signature.  No contestant will be allowed to

enter any water event without the “Entry Arm Band”.

3.                              Contestants must pre-register prior to race time.  Dockside

master, Timers & Judges decisions are final.  Any misconduct

by a contestant will result in disqualification of the boat and its

crew.  Race organizers reserve the right to disqualify an

individual, team and/or any crewmembers deemed to be in an

             altered state at race time.

4.                              Design of the boat is left to the builder(s).  There is no limit to

the size of the boat or crew.  A participant may “captain” only

one boat, but may also serve as crewmember on another boat.

5.                              All participants will have with them a serviceable approved

PFDs (ie. Life jacket) and must be the correct size.   These

PFDs must be fastened at all times.   All participants must wear

protection on their feet to eliminate injury from stepping on

debris or sharp objects (Flip Flops are not acceptable).  We do

      not supply PFDs or oars.

8.               Pre-registration must be done in order for the judges to

             categorize your boat.

9.            Another reminder to bring a change of clothes for the trip h          home  just in case you might need them.

The Boat

Boats must be made according to the outlined specifications only.  Remember, one of the judges is in the hardware business and will know if the boat was assembled with any illegal substance, so please stick to the rules so you won’t be disqualified.

1.                  CARDBOARD – Boats can be constructed from corrugated non-waxed cardboard only.  NO solid laminates like carpet tubes, shipping tubes, construction-footing tubes, etc.  The use of wood, Styrofoam or

             anything non-cardboard is not permitted.

2.                  GLUE & PAINT – contact cement or rubber cement may be

used to join the seams, ½” only.  Hulls may be painted  with

“two-part” varnishes or paints may be used.

3.                   TAPE - Duct Tape may be of varying colors for creativity but

must have come manufactured in that color.  Duct tape may be

used over the seams ONLY.  Please do not cover your boat with tape,    it adds too much weight & slows you down, besides it is not

            allowed.

4.                   SAFETY For safety sake, the structure of your magnificent vessel cannot interfere with the crew from making a hasty exit in the

case of a sinking vessel.  All crewmembers must have a clear exit

path from the vessel.  Your boat can be disqualified if it has a

structure enclosing the shoulders or is located above the crew.

5.                  WASHERS, NUTS & BOLTS- These items may be used to hold

            your boat seams together.

6.                   OARLOCKS - no oarlocks are permitted.  A boat must be

powered by humans using oars only.

7.                   BOAT IDENTIFICATION - all boats must display their boat

number on the bow & stern (front & back) and are allowed to

have their name & logo on their boat.

ALL BOATS MUST HAVE A FLOAT ATTACHED

with a minimum of 4 feet of line.  This will allow us to identify where the wreckage to be found.

8.                  DECORATING – Trim or decorating your boat is allowed but

must not aid in floatation or structure of the boat.  Decorations

that may become dislodged from the boat in the water (i.e.) must

be avoided.  If this should occur, a hefty fine will be imposed for

            the committee to clean up.

If any illegal items used in construction are discovered during the pre-race inspection, the boat will be disqualified from the event.
